The most inhospitable and wildest beaches and coves of the Mediterranean

The Almeria region is known for its stunning beaches and almost paradisiacal coves.

It is true that some of them are not easily accessible and that we have to walk for a while to reach them, but, believe us, it is worth it. Of course, the paths and accesses can even be done by children.

We tell you which are our favourite beaches and coves in Almería and which, in our opinion, you should not miss the opportunity to visit if you are in the area.

  • Playa de los Genoveses: located in the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Níjar, the beach of Los Genoveses is a natural jewel with golden sand and crystal clear waters. Surrounded by dunes and native vegetation, it is perfect for those looking to relax in a natural environment without large crowds.

  • Playa de las Salinas: known for its long stretch of sand and views of the imposing Cabo de Gata lighthouse, this beach is ideal for long walks and enjoying the unparalleled coastal scenery. Its proximity to the salt flats also offers the opportunity to observe a variety of birds, including flamingos.

  • Cala de en Medio; This cove, accessible only on foot or by boat, is a hidden haven between Agua Amarga and Las Negras. Its turquoise waters and golden cliffs offer spectacular scenery for diving and snorkelling.

In addition, and in general, the coasts of Almería are ideal for sports such as surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddle surfing. The beaches of El Playazo and Las Negras are especially popular with fans of these sports.

Almeria, a paradise for nature and outdoor activities lovers

Man does not live by the beach alone! Almeria is an incredible destination for people who prefer to change, or alternate, the beach with nature, excursions and outdoor activities.

Here are the main natural parks in Almeria. Believe us, it has not been an easy task to choose just three.

  • Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park: this park is a real ecological treasure, with volcanic landscapes, virgin coves and a unique biodiversity. It offers numerous hiking trails, such as the one that leads to the Mirador de las Sirenas, from where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean.

  • Tabernas Desert: the scene of Western films par excellence and a must for lovers of the genre! The only desert in Europe that is famous for its arid landscapes and has been the setting for numerous westerns. Visitors can explore this unique environment on foot, by bike or on guided tours, as well as visit the theme parks that recreate the atmosphere of the old west.

  • Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park: Ideal for hikers and birdwatchers, this park in the interior of the province offers a variety of routes through forests and mountains. The cave paintings in the Cueva de los Letreros are a must for those interested in prehistoric history.

In addition to the routes in the natural parks, Almería offers numerous hiking options. The Ruta del Agua, which connects different springs and fountains, and the Sendero de Aguamarga to Cala San Pedro are two of the most recommended.

Culture, history and gastronomy with a 100% Mediterranean flavour in Almeria

Culture, history and gastronomy come together in one in the region of Almería.

From perfectly preserved Arab fortresses and their spectacular views of the city and the port to the old town and the charm of strolling through its narrow streets and discovering the hundreds of small squares that wind their way through its streets to its cathedral, a visit to the city of Almería is a must.

The same goes for its Mediterranean gastronomy full of its own flavours and recipes. Meat, fresh fish, the incredible dried octopus… the offer is as infinite as its flavours.

Finally, it is well worth spending a day visiting the so-called white villages. Mojácar, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, or Níjar, known for its ceramic and jarapas handicrafts, are surely worth a day of tranquillity.
